PADI Open Water Diver – Step 1

Knowledge Development

The Knowledge Development portion of the PADI Open Water Diver course introduces you to the principles of scuba diving in a way that’s easy to understand and flexible to complete.

You’ll learn at your own pace, either:

Online using PADI eLearning, or
At a PADI Dive Centre, with support from a PADI Instructor.

This section covers the essential knowledge needed for safe and enjoyable diving, including:

Basic scuba equipment and how it works
Fundamental dive skills and techniques
Underwater communication
Dive planning and safety procedures

Knowledge Development prepares you for the in-water training sessions and ensures you feel confident before entering the water.

PADI Open Water Diver – Step 2

Confined Water Dives

During Confined Water Dives, you’ll learn and practice essential scuba skills in a pool or pool-like environment, under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor.

Skills are introduced gradually, allowing you to develop comfort, control, and confidence underwater.

This training ensures you are prepared for diving in open water environments, such as a lake or the ocean, before progressing to the final phase of the course.

PADI Open Water Diver – Step 3

Open Water Dives

During Open Water Dives, you’ll complete your training dives in an open water environment, such as a lake or the ocean, under the supervision of a PADI Instructor.

You’ll apply the knowledge and skills learned during Knowledge Development and Confined Water Dives while gaining real-world diving experience. After successfully completing the required open water dives and meeting performance requirements, you’ll earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification.

PADI Open Water Diver – Beginner

Diver certification begins here. Start with PADI’s online eLearning course, move to the pool to practice your new skills, and then experience four open water dives in the ocean or a lake.

Description

Academic

The course is divided into three main phases:

Knowledge Development – Online, independent study, or in a classroom to understand the basic principles of scuba diving.
Confined Water Dives – Practice essential scuba skills in a pool or pool-like environment.
Open Water Dives – Apply your skills while exploring in a real open water environment.

Equipment

During the course, you’ll learn to use basic scuba gear, including:

Mask
Snorkel
Fins
Regulator
Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
Tank

Equipment may vary depending on tropical, temperate, or cold water conditions. Check with your PADI Instructor at Scubaworld or Universal Adventures for details about the gear you’ll use. They’ll also advise on everything you need to dive safely.

You can begin learning immediately with PADI Open Water Diver Online, PADI’s interactive eLearning program. It provides the knowledge you need to dive safely and allows you to study at your own pace.

Visit your local PADI Dive Shop to enroll, pick up your materials, and start learning. Your PADI Instructor will review your progress and make sure you understand all essential scuba diving information.
